Site Feedback / Mapping walks

merlinsmum said:
Have been trying to map a walk done on public footpaths.

Unfortunately the window showing the walk is not big enough - on higher magnification I can see the paths (not on Map) but the map doesn't scroll up while I'm trying to plot.

On lower magnification I can't see enough detail to properly follow.

This is despite using Satellite and Hybrid.

I'm not also able to draw a line of a walk and then add to it after (e.g. having scrolled up to get to the next bit).

Have tried doing it on smaller res map but it was wildly inaccurate. I love doing walks on public footpaths across fields etc but it's not easy to add them! I have many walks I can add if only this can be ironed out. Public Footpaths are the future of dogwalking - everyone should buy an ordnance survey map showing them. In some places you could walk for days offroad - this site should reflect that!!

I often take pics too, so if I am able to plot the walks correctly, I feel I have a lot to contribute to your new site. Thumbs up anyways, have often thought it would be nice for a walk database... or at the least a way of recording my travels with my dog.

Shouldn't be limited to walks - any journey, esp by public transport could be recorded, I travel about 1,000 miles a year with my canine companion by bus & train, and that could be recorded too. Many people are unaware that dogs are welcome on trains and I've not paid a penny for my dog on buses, trains or ferries in 4 years and 3,000+ miles. Bargain! :D

Welcome and thanks for the feedback!

The walk creating tool on the website is not really meant to be the primary method for tracing walks out and as you have found, can be a little tricky to get the hang of. The website was created with automatic walk tracking in mind and to those ends, we have some exciting developments in the very near future as follows;

Our iPhone application will be with Apple for approval next week and will enable iPhone owners to automatically track their walks by satellite and upload their walks directly to the site. Users who have access to an Android powered Google phone will also be able to use the My Tracks application to track and upload their walks too so that they don't feel left out. Both iPhone and Android users can also benefit from our special mobile optimised website.

As for walk creation on the website. If you are working at high resolution, what you could do is mark part of the walk on the screen, then switch to "normal" mode and drag the map to see the next part of your walk, and then switch back to freehand drawing and draw the next segment of the walk.

We still have a lot of work to do on the site and new features to release, and I'll certainly give some thought as to whether we can provide an easier way of allowing you to move the map in the direction you want without having to come out of drawing mode, I agree it would make things easier.

Looking forward to seeing some walk pictures too - that really helps being a walk to life.

Thanks for the feedback!

OK.... I just tried this and it didn't work! Oh dear :( I wasn't able to add or draw any more once I'd scrolled onwards.

Sadly I won't be able to use the iPhone application, as my mobile is fairly ancient and I won't be able to upgrade for a very long time.
