Today the RSPCA has warned owners that pet dogs that are older, overweight or long-haired may be more at risk of dying in the heat. But take heed, all pooches are vulnerable, leading the group to plead with those with canine companions to take care of them this summer. It urged people to learn the signs of heatstroke - which can include gastrointestinal issues, red or purple gums, a rapid pulse and a lack of co-ordination - and have a plan ready if such a situation was to arise. Firstly, the pet should be moved to a cool spot before any other action is taken, including ringing a veterinarian for help. Then, the pooch should be sprayed with cool - not cold - water, although it is vital it does not get so chilly it begins to shiver. This should be continued, along with the feeding of small amounts of Water, before getting quickly to the vet's. "If you leave your dog in a car, caravan or conservatory during the summer you are putting your much-loved pet at risk, it's as simple as that," chief veterinary advisor Mark Evans said.
