Articles / DODADOG at Christmas

WOOF, WOOF, WOOF Christmas is on its way.

No doubt you will want to give the 4 legged member of the family a great time with treats at Christmas, it might seem like a great way to make them feel part of the festivities, but you could be seriously harming his/her health.

Dog owners need to take care not to go over the top, you will most likely want to give your dog a little bit of Christmas dinner, maybe a bit of turkey, stuffing, a roast potato or three, and some will go as far as even giving trifle or Christmas pudding.

Unfortunately, these foods are some of the ones that can trigger a food intolerance in your best friend.

If this is the case then the symptoms could be itching and scratching, or a probable upset stomach, with an end result of diarrhoea.

Very fatty foods can lead to serious problems like as pancreatitis, which is a very painful
inflammatory condition, and not what your dog wants for Christmas, even with the best intentions.

If your dog does show signs of an allergic skin condition, itching and scratching, a detoxifying diet should be followed to cleanse the system, and get them back to their usual diet as soon as possible. If there is dry skin try Comfrey or Calendula Skin Balm it can help with it.

Dogs are like us and some have a more a delicate digestive systems than others; so giving too much rich food can soon develop into an upset tummy.

If your dog does develop diarrhoea and it lasts for more than a few days, then. it is important, to talk with your vet.

Don't be tempted to give you dog human stomach remedies, it was your fault if you over/miss fed them, so go to the vet.

They can't talk and rarely know if they have had enough, so don't tempt them with things they shouldn't have. Treat them for sure, maybe a ham bone or pigs ear, no chocolate or sweets or alcohol! And on the subject of alcohol, if you are planning to have a few too many or already have ... THE DOG MUST BE WALKED, or at the very least played with in the garden.

Dogs really have no idea what Christmas is about, but I think we all agree that they love the emotion and company that comes.
