Articles / TIPS ON KEEPING YOUR DOG COOL AND HYDRATED

topdog said:
It's getting very hot out there, and it takes so little for a dog to overheat!
Before taking your dog out with you in the car consider if you really have to.
If you can leave your dog at home, with plenty of cold water and a shady spot. Do think about where your dog stays when you are3 not home, conservatory's and heavily glassed buildings can also get seriously hot in the summer, leave a window open if at all possible.
If you have to take your dog out in the car here are some tip's

Tip 1
The day before you can get an empty water bottle..fill it up about 1-3 in. high with water and freeze it over night. (dont fill it anymore than 1/3 or it will explode and you won't be able to top it up)
Tip 2
When its time to go, fill the rest of the water bottle with water. Or if you're using a container fill with water and enough ice to keep it cold during the trip.
Tip 3
Keep a window open, if you have air conditioning then use it
Tip 4
Make regular stops for both water and toilet
Tip 5
Give them water occationally. Wet the washcloth and keep the dogs coat moist by rubbing the cloth over them. The more they pant or the hotter it gets...the more often you should do this. This will help the heat escape so they'll stay cool!

Things to be aware of...

Its not a good idea to give freezing or ice water to dogs who are heavily panting(obviously they're too hot)...this is a health hazard.
if your dog is hot and heavily panting...give them room temperature water and gradually begin to cool them...to much at once is not good for them!
if it really gets hot you could leave the wet towel or washcloth on your dog..and they'll be ok...its cute too!
REMEMBER dogs overheat way faster than humans. Their only way of releasing that heat is through panting. So keeping them hydrated and moist or wet helps a GREAT DEAL.
Do NOT for ANY reason leave your dog inside a car by themselves when the car is off or with the windows up!
Cars can heat up EXTREMELY fast to extreme degrees!!! TOO many dogs die because they're left inside a car...even with mild, but sunny conditions the inside of a car can become very hot very quick.

JUST THINK...AND GIVE DRINK

This is a film to drive the message home
