Before the bad weather set in over here in the UK, I wrote about keeping you dog in tiptop condition in winter (Nov 19th), well we've had a direct mail from a dodadog user with a story that we should all take heed of.

Before you read it,just to add to the heart string tug. The dog in question Frida is still a very young dog who in the last year has survived a mauling from a very viscous and uncontrolled Staff, and then survived a random park poisoning that killed another dog she was playing with. This is a copy of the mail; Hope you are well. Just to let you know that I walked to work today as the roads were soooo icy and Frida must have stepped in some salt/grit and one of her paws started bleeding quite a bit. The pad of her paw has quite a big cut in it , and after calling the Vet they told me that some of the salts are corrosive to dogs feet. Just thought you could put a little warning or info up on the site. Will I have to buy something as stupid as dog shoes ? Regards This is a real problem that many people never have the need to think about. It's worth knowing that, rock salt and other salt-based ice melters contain sodium chloride or potassium chloride which can heat up to 175 degrees when exposed to water, ice and low temperatures. During cold ice periods people, and councils use all sorts of things to keep roads pavements and paths snow and ice free. There are things you can do; Wipe your dogs paws when you get back home, this may seem over the top but what would you do to your feet if you had been out in the snow bare foot, and your soles were burning with salt burns. Salt your own paths/patios with dog friendly deicing products try Safe Paw - here's a youtuber showing how it works Or as our dodadog member feared, shoes/boots, yes it's real and they do exist. As you would imagine dodadog members in the states have a vast choice of boots/shoes for their four legged friends, for example these are for sale on the site. But even here in the slightly less over the top U.K you can purchase these; Whatever you do please pause to think about paws IN DOG WE TRUST There are no replies yet, why not be the first? |
