Articles / WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR DOG IS IN SEASON

topdog said:
It can be a total nightmare for both dog and owner when a bitch comes into season.
As well as the obvious mess in the house, it’s what happens when you need to take her out that can be the real night mare.

There are as many opinions in the dog world on the best thing to do at this time, as there are blades of grass in the park. Here are a few thoughts and suggestions.

You should, if you have no intention of breeding, sterilize your dog. There is a continual debate as to whether or not you should allow them to have at least one season or not, take advice from your vet and read up before making a choice.
Not only will it prevent unwanted puppies but also it may prolong her lifespan by avoiding certain types of cancer associated to females who haven’t breed.

Keep her calm.,she's anxious during this time and needs love and attention. Schedule extra time to stroke and groom her. Avoid allowing youngsters to play to much with them and get them over excited.

Some people apply a little scented/menthol rub to a spot just under the female dog's tail to put off any would-be suitors.

Keep her inside as much as you can and walk when other dog owners are less likely to be out. Male dogs are attracted by the scent of a female in heat up to three miles away.

Keep an eye on your fence. Even if your female dog can't jump out, male dogs may be able to jump in.

Give her some chlorophyll tablets. Dog owners use these with varying success in an attempt to mask a female's odor during her heat cycle. Ask your vet for the recommended dosage based upon your dog's weight.

You can dress her in a pair of protective doggy pants to protect your floor and furniture from blood stains. Most pet shops stock them or use the dodadog shop, these pull-on nappies have a hole for her tail to stick out. Keep enough on hand to last for the first two weeks of her three-week cycle.

What ever you do be aware that a lusty male dog will not give up, and sometimes the best thing to do is avoid all other dogs during this period.
